The global movement that started on Dearborn Street

On this day in 1905, the very first Rotary Club was founded in nearby Chicago by attorney Paul P. Harris and three of his business associates. They met in a small office in the Unity Building on Dearborn Street with the simple goal of recapturing the friendly spirit they had known in the small towns of their youth. That single meeting sparked a global movement of "Service Above Self" that now includes over 46,000 clubs worldwide—including the many active Rotary chapters serving our neighbors right here in DuPage County today.
Local Fun Fact
Mail Order Capital of the Midwest!
Downers Grove holds one of the world's largest concentrations of Sears Catalog Homes. Between 1908 and 1940, people could literally order a high-quality, pre-cut house from the Sears Roebuck catalog, and it would arrive by train in about 30,000 pieces (including a 75-page instruction manual).
While many towns have a few, Downers Grove has dozens of these "kit homes" still standing and meticulously maintained. It was the ultimate "templated" construction of the early 20th century—essentially the "Scrum" of homebuilding for the middle class.
That’s it for Today.
