Glenbard West Students Debut Documentary Celebrating 40th Anniversary of "Lucas"
Journalism students at Glenbard West High School have produced a new documentary titled Hollywood on the Hilltop: "Lucas" 40 Years Later, celebrating the four-decade legacy of the 1986 coming-of-age film. The 13-minute film features interviews with local residents, former students, and cast members who shared their memories of the production, which was shot at several suburban locations including Glenbard West and the Glen Art Theatre. The project was developed under a tight schedule starting in February, with students learning documentary filmmaking and professional interviewing techniques on the fly to meet the anniversary deadline.
The documentary is currently being showcased at the Glen Art Theatre in Glen Ellyn, where a five-minute trailer runs alongside special screenings of the original Lucas through April 2. The full documentary is scheduled to be released on the Glen Bard student newspaper website, providing a nostalgic look back at the "insanity" and community pride that surrounded the film’s original 1985 production. To complement the screenings, the Glen Ellyn Historical Society has also provided a collection of memorabilia and news clippings from the 1980s for display in the theater lobby.

The event kicks off with an auction preview on Friday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., allowing potential bidders to get a close look at the pieces. On the day of the auction, doors will open at 8 a.m., with bidding officially starting at 9 a.m. This "bittersweet" event marks the end of an era for the cinema's current aesthetic as it moves toward a modernized look, offering local film fans and collectors a rare chance to own a piece of suburban movie history.
