Route 59 "Patchwork" Push
Commuters heading through the Naperville/Aurora corridor should prepare for a significant increase in activity starting today. As part of the $105 million "Rebuild Illinois" initiative for 2026, crews are beginning a massive patching project on Route 59. The work covers nearly four miles between McCoy Drive and Artesian Road. While most lanes will remain open, expect periodic "rolling" closures during mid-day hours. This project is a critical precursor to the heavier resurfacing planned for later this summer, aiming to fix the potholes opened up by last week’s wild 80-degree-to-40-degree temperature swing.
The Atlas Breaks Ground
Following its recent approval, preliminary site work has officially begun on "The Atlas" development at the south end of Naperville (near 75th St). This five-story, 236-unit residential complex is a cornerstone of the city’s plan to increase density for working professionals. Residents can expect to see heavy machinery and perimeter fencing going up this week. This project, combined with the ongoing $53 million Block 59 redevelopment nearby, is rapidly transforming the South Route 59 corridor into a high-density "live-work-play" destination.
DuPage River Trail: The Wheatland Extension
The Forest Preserve District is moving forward with the next phase of the DuPage River Trail extension. The current focus is the Wheatland Township segment, which will eventually link 119th Street to 127th Street. This phase includes replacing a section of Book Road with a dedicated 12-foot-wide paved path.

🐞 Local Fun Fact
In the 1930s, the Ovaltine plant in Villa Park was so bustling with mail from the Little Orphan Annie and Captain Midnight radio shows that the village was granted its own first-class post office in 1935—a rarity for a town of its size at the time—just to handle the millions of requests for "Secret Decoder Rings."
