After a one-year hiatus, Aurora GreenFest is set to return on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free, family-friendly event is organized by the City of Aurora in partnership with the Mayor's Sustainable Aurora Advisory Board and Aurora GreenLights. This year's festival, themed “Make a Difference! Be Energy Smart!”, will feature over 100 exhibitors focused on educating the community about energy efficiency, planet conservation, and sustainable living practices.

Attendees can explore a variety of resources, including information on household rebates, "do-it-yourself" project demonstrations, and specialized exhibits from organizations like the Chicago Herpetological Society and the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association. The event will also see the return of the community marketplace, showcasing vendors with products designed to make homes more healthy and energy efficient. Applications for local artists, artisans, and environmental groups to participate as vendors are still being accepted through the official festival website.

Dumont Creamery & Cafe, an international ice cream chain founded in Hyderabad, India, has announced plans to open its first Illinois location in Naperville this summer. Scheduled to debut in mid-July 2026 at the Block 59 dining and entertainment complex, the shop will serve as the brand's state flagship. Known for its "global palette," the creamery curates flavors inspired by popular desserts from around the world, offering a unique alternative to traditional American ice cream varieties. In addition to its signature frozen treats, the Naperville location will feature boba tea and a premium coffee program in partnership with the coffee brand Karafa.

The new Naperville store is designed to be more than a quick-service stop; it aims to provide an elevated, "cozy and elegant" cafe experience where patrons are encouraged to linger, work, or host social events. Under the direction of master franchise owner Sai Uppalapati, the brand is aggressively expanding its U.S. footprint, with 15 stores currently operational and dozens more under construction. Following the Naperville launch, the company is already eyeing further expansion into other Chicago suburbs, including Aurora, Plainfield, Oak Park, and Buffalo Grove, as it works toward a goal of nearly 50 U.S. locations by the end of the year.

Three eighth-grade students from Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville recently testified before state lawmakers in Springfield as part of a mission to designate the black and gold bumblebee as the official state bee of Illinois. 

Liza Disanto, Sofia Nicoloudes, and Ahana Patel presented months of research to the House State Government Administration Committee, highlighting the bee's vital role in the state's ecosystem and its native status. The initiative began as a classroom project to fill a gap in Illinois’ official symbols, which currently include a state bird, insect (the monarch butterfly), and fruit, but no specific state bee.

The students conducted a statewide effort to select the best representative, surveying peers across Illinois to narrow down three native candidates: the American bumblebee, the bicolored striped sweat bee, and the black and gold bumblebee, before selecting the latter for their proposal. 

By testifying in person, the students aimed to show lawmakers the importance of protecting native pollinators while demonstrating the impact of student-led civic engagement. If the legislation passes, the black and gold bumblebee would join the ranks of the white oak and the blue violet as a permanent symbol of the Prairie State.

On this day in 2011, India celebrated a monumental victory as they clinched the Cricket World Cup for the second time under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. The excitement was palpable as fans across the nation erupted in joy, marking a historic moment in sports history. 

Back in 1960, when the town of Carol Stream was brand new, it didn't have its own fire protection. Three different districts—Keeneyville, Bloomingdale, and Winfield—all went to court to argue over who should get to protect the new village. A judge ultimately "awarded" the territory to Keeneyville. For years, the department was actually known as the Keeneyville Fire Protection District before eventually changing its name to Carol Stream in 1973.
