🐞 Local Fun Fact
Did you know that Lombard is home to one of the most hilarious victories in the history of women’s rights? On April 6, 1891—decades before the 19th Amendment—a resident named Ellen Martin led a group of women to the voting booth at a local general store. She argued that the town charter didn't explicitly forbid women from voting.
The three male election judges were so stunned that one reportedly had a "spasm," another had to lean against the wall for support, and the third fell backward into a barrel of flour. They eventually gave in, and Ellen Martin became the first woman in Illinois history to cast a vote.
